The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is PERFECTION in my mind.
For a kid who was obsessed with the lean green fighting teens, the release of a live action Ninja Turtles film was a dream come true.
Fans gravitate to anything related to that film. I watch that movie on a regular basis and after meeting Judith Hoag (the original April O'Neil) and having her sign my DVD copy, it's even a bigger gem in my
Because the film is so regarded, people eat up anything that is 'old school' turtles and market for toys based on the films have been high on collectors want lists. Some companies tried to make action figures based on the design of the films but they just never looked like their live-action counter parts
NECA, a company that has sculpted some of the best movie figures imaginable, miraculously got the go-ahead to produce figures based on the original films in their 1/4 scale line.
FINALLY we have figures that not only resemble the film characters, but also look like they popped out of the film themselves.
The figure comes packed in a great box that has images from the movie poster on front and the movie turtles on the back, an image used for VHS (remember those?) and DVD releases.
After Donatello was released from his prison (I say that because he had a ton of twisty ties to remove) you will be blinded by the glory. Seriously, I thought I heard harps playing.
The paint is exquisite; the sculpting is amazing (pictures just don't do justice to the level of detail. Look at the skin, the shell, OH MY!). The use of cloth for the bandana and strap for the bo staff is genius. The paint with the shadowing, and the skin markings that the film actually had! BEAUTIFUL! This is a labor of love for the team at NECA and it shows! This figure is HEAVY and the joints are tight. He poses really well as the articulation is full.
He comes with some great accessories too! He comes with multiple hands so he can hold each accessory depending on the size. This also gives Donatello a lot of cool display options.
Of course he comes with his trusty weapon, the bo staff. He also comes with a slice of pizza (Ninja Turtles and pizza go together like PB & J) and a TCRI cannister ('It's not slime, it's ooze!')
Donatello is the first of the 4 brothers to be released. Raphael is out currently (I'll be ordering very soon), with Leonardo coming in the spring and Michelangelo out in the summer. Owning all 4 is going to take up a lot of room but they are going to be the stand-out highlight of my Ninja Turtles collection and I can't wait!
'Man, I love being a Turtle!'
