Impulse Buys-Part 3 (the final chapter...for now)

Well, here's the final part of this 3 part blog entry of my impulse buys. If you need to see what the criteria was to be listed, it's found in part 2.

 Video Game figures

I'm looping in 'Movies based on video games' here since to me they are kinda in the same thought.

I either bought these because they were really cheap (in the case of Sackboy from 'Lil Big Planet', Gears of war figures, etc), or I wanted the accessories (Prince of Persia-wanted the horse and the gate) or I had the idea of 'what if I went out of my Super Mario collection and got other characters and have a 'SMASH BROS' collection?', which completely went nowhere when I gave up on buying other characters because I didn't really have an attachment to other characters. Most of these are now in a bin somewhere or I gave away some of them to people who had true attachment to the characters.

Dunny, other vinyl figures, and random plushies

This one I will chalk up as a big loss and misguided reading of my wife's inner thoughts. I had envisioned that I could get my wife into collecting some type of toy-line or collectible series in the way that I collect things. I pictured the two of us going on the hunt to stores and enjoying the thrill. Any time she would see something and thought 'awww, how cute!' I thought that meant 'oh cool, I want to collect those'. It started with plushies, with me buying things like 'Skullanimals' (animals with skull faces) and 'Singamajigs' (characters that hold musical notes when you squeeze their bellies). After amassing so much, I started to realize that I was buying all of these things on my own and it was I who was collecting these things. Then my wife told me that she didn't even have any really connection and had no real interest in any of it. I could have used all of the funds on other things that we could have used. Lesson learned. Wah wah...

Minimates and Imaginext figures

Now don't get me wrong, I still have plenty of the two. But then I went outside my collection and things got out of hand. I have a huge Ninja Turtles minimates collection which I love, but then I started to get some random Marvel characters (which I somehow lost but had a ho-hum attitude about it) and the Ghostbusters ones which I ended up selling off. They were cool but I didn't really need them (I did end up getting the LEGO Ghostbusters with Ecto-1 and the Mattel Ghostbusters figures so now I'm kind of wishing I had kept the Minimates now that I have more GB stuff).

The Imaginext figures are neat and all but I only collected the Superman ones and that lead to getting Batman ones (in retrospect I should have just been happy with the Superman related ones since Superman is my main collection type). After that I was just looking for things to buy and got caught up in the whole Blind Bag nonsense.

Quirky gimmick toys

I don't think that toy companies picture an adult man getting a kick out of their toy concept and buys them out of impulse. But that's what happens when something random like this is on clearance. The set came with 3 different animals and you mix the parts to create bizarre mutants. I still think it's a fun concept but is this necessary for a grown man to have and how do I explain this hanging around my collection that I try to make legit?

Transformers

Ok, so I grew up during the hey-day of 80's toys. Masters of the Universe, Voltron, Ninja Turtles, Centaurians, GI Joe, Thundercats, and of course Transformers.

I had a few Transformers as a kid and I did watch the cartoon but I wasn't as into them as I was Masters of the Universe and Ninja Turtles. I, however, LOVED Optimus Prime and being my favorite I had a few figures of him. Then the Transformers movie came out and I NEEDED anything and everything action figure-wise from the movie and sub-lines. I got every character. Then it hit me that I really didn't care for most of the characters past the core figures and even the core figures weren't the greatest toys. So I gave all of them to my nephews to destroy and not take care of because that's what most kids do. Sad Panda.

Well, that's it for now. There are a ton more I could go over but then the thought of the time and money wasted on these toy lines and action figures that could have been spent on so many other things hits me, and I want to go into a corner and cry ('Homies' anyone?). The life of a collector...
