Sometimes we collect too many lines that it ends up not being fun because you don't have the time to enjoy what you have because you're busting your tail trying to get that missing item in your various collections.
Then there are those moments where there is nothing out. You're up to date with your collections and you're now in the lull where you need something to entertain you but you have everything at the moment. Then you go outside of what you normally collect to fill that void. Falling into that trap happens in so many ways too.
1) You can either see something that someone else owns and think 'that's pretty cool, I may want that' even if it doesn't fit with anything you collect.
2) I've know collectors who've gotten caught in the hysteria where there's a MUST HAVE figure, everyone is getting it, 'I don't want to be left out' so you take the plunge. Lastly
3) It's on CLEARANCE. I've bought many things that I don't generally collect just because it goes on clearance and I think that I could use it for other things.
IMPULSE BUYS are triggered by anyone of the 3 criteria mentioned above.
So here is Part 1 of things that are currently in my collection that I've either used once and relegated it to the dreaded 'basement', or that I purchased and no longer have knowing it never was really meant for me.
S.L.U.G. (Scary, Little, Ugly, Guys) Zombies
This was one of those clearance buys where $20 can get you every set (those deep discounts) and gives you that sense of achievement that you have so many for so little. The little plastic zombies (and human survivors) do have their appeal and the designs are creative, but in the long run they're just not for me. These are now in a bucket that I break out on Halloween but I don't ever display them even during that holiday. Kind of a waste on my part.
Reel Steel Boxing Ring
Ok, so the second pic looks pretty cool but the scale is way off. The ring is meant for smaller figures and it was hard to tell, scale-wise, from the box that it wouldn't work. I picked this ring up for like $7 and that's a great deal, but it didn't look good with any of my figures and the construction was cheap. Another basement residence.
Queen's Blade (Revoltech)
I knew nothing about Queen's Blade when I first saw the figures on an action figure community site, but I was drawn to the alternate faces as accessories deal. That was something I was not used to at the time and felt I needed these. They were an expensive endeavor as they were in the $45 a pop area. I used some for fun pictures but in the end seeing how they didn't fit in with anything I already had and learning what Queen's Blade was really about (it's borderline cartoon porn), I said 'yeah I need to get rid of these' and sold them off.
miWorld Dairy Queen Set
Those that know me know that I'm a sucker for play sets and accessories. I feel that they give life as a backdrop to action figures. One of the sets that I got was a Dairy Queen set from miWorld. I had this idea where heroes and villains would chill out (no pun intended...or was it?) eating ice cream together. Yeah...it was a lot funnier in my head. I used the play set a handful of times. At least the accessories are nice. Another thing just living in the basement.
(Some) Masters of the Universe Classics
Notice that I said 'SOME'. I have a great affinity for Masters of the Universe and He-Man. That was my childhood and my first action figures. I was obsessed and I still love the property. Mattel brought back Masters of the Universe in the form of collector figures and then created a subscription where collectors can sign up and receive every character. Sounds great, right? Not completely. Mattel stretched the line and created characters that were never in the original universe or 3rd tier characters that were only popular to a very vocal minority. So subscribers were 'stuck' with figures of characters they may not have wanted. I do love my Masters of the Universe Classics figures but I can do without a good portion of them. The subscription was that impulse buy.
Medicom Spider-Man
Clearly I had no idea what to really do with the thing (I made him into a vigilante pimp for some reason). When I first saw pictures of it, I thought that he would be a great figure to have. However, the suit restricted his movement and I couldn't have him do 'anything a spider can'. I was let down, especially after the amount of money I paid for it. Thankfully I was able to sell it for the same price I got him for.
I have a ton of others that I spotted in my picture log which is why I'm breaking these up in parts. Catch you in part 2 (Dunnys, anyone?)
